Painting Plexiglass

Q: A friend asked me to do a painting for their bar on a piece of plexiglass which will then be hung in the window. I was thinking of using acrylic paints for the piece but was unsure if it would adhere to the plexiglass. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

A:  Acrylic latex (water based) paints are probably the best of all your available choices. I do suggest, however, that you experiment before you paint the entire job.  You need to insure that the acrylic does not dissolve the Plexiglass.  If it does, you will immediately see this defect. If it does not affect the substrate, then also check for adhesion.

Best wishes,

Ron Joseph
