Polyurethane over Porch Paint

Q. We live in a house that is over 100 years old. I had tried stripping the steps going to the second floor only discovering I would need to paint them. I sanded them down and painted them with porch paint from Home Depot. They look wonderful but I would like to give them a sheen. My question; can I put polyurethane over porch paint?

A. You probably can apply polyurethane over the porch paint, but I suggest you first wipe down with solvent, such as isopropyl alcohol and then lightly sand the entire area. Since I have no idea what porch paint you are using, it is always a good idea to first try a small area in an inconspicuous location and look for incompatibility. After a few days try to lift the polyurethane off. If adhesion is excellent, you are good to go. If not, don't do the remainder of the job.

Good luck,

Ron Joseph
