Baked Enamel vs. Powder Coating

Q: I was wondering if you could help me... I am buying an overhead door for a hospital project, and was wondering what the difference in quality/durability, etc. would be for a baked enamel finish on the door vs. a powder coat finish. Would there be a big difference? Any information would be greatly appreciated!

A: If the pretreatment processes and the application of the coatings meet the coating vendor's recommendations, the baked coating will have similar performance to the powder coating. Having said that, you should be aware that not all coating resins are the same.  Some perform better when exposed to outdoor elements and sunlight, than others.  Without more information I feel somewhat comfortable telling you that both systems, when properly applied will give you similar performance.

Best wishes,

Ron Joseph
