Applying Epoxy to Aluminum for Exterior Applications

Q. Do you know of the best way to prime aluminum for an epoxy coating, in a field application as I described previously?

A. At the very least, I would want to abrade the surface to remove the naturally formed aluminum oxide. Ideally, you would abrasive blast the surface and then immediately apply the wash primer. But you need to be careful that you do not apply excessive primer, else you might get blistering or delamination of the epoxy.

Best wishes,

Ron Joseph
