How to Restore a Stained Powder Coated Table Top?
Q: I have an old black powder coated steel set of end tables from Ikea circa 1985. For some reason the tops are all blotchy and stained. What should I do besides sending them out to be redone? Thanks for any ideas.
A: You can try to remove the powder coating by using a chemical paint stripper, but this is a messy business that might take several applications of the chemical Also, you will need to be very careful how you handle the paint stripper so as not to injure yourself. Abrasive blasting is very effective, but for that you will need to take the tables to a job shop that performs this service.
I have found PeelAway #7 (http://www.dumondchemicals.com/html/peelaway.htm) to be an effective paint stripper, but as always, I strongly suggest that you follow the vendor's instructions especially with regard to health and safety.
Once you have removed the coating and properly prepared the metal you can repaint with a coating system of your choice.
