Corrosion Preventive Compounds

Q. We manufacture aerospace components mainly of 7075-T6 aluminum. We have a corrosion problem that mainly takes place in between machining operations. The parts are cleaned and dry and free from any visible coolant residue and still we get corrosion activity which is quite difficult to remove. Can you suggest a an application of some substance that will give at least temporary protection and can be easily removed and not interfere with later plating operations?

A. Have you thought of applying a temporary protective coating such as Tectyl products? Here is a URL that you might find interesting http://www.corrosioncontrol.ca/Mil-Spec/tectyl.htm. The coatings are formulated with different viscosity characteristics and some are easier to remove than others. Tectyl products are not the only ones in this category. Go to Google and enter "Cosmoline" and you'll find a host of sites that discuss this range of products.

You might prefer to use a Vapor Corrosion Inhibitor (VCI) and if you enter these key words into Google you will also come up with numerous references.

Regards,

Ron Joseph
