Clear Coating Over Steel

Q. Is there any product that will permanently seal hot rolled steel (prevent it from scratching and rusting). I know painting is an option but I am looking for something that goes on clear and brings out the natural color of the steel.

A. There is a wide range of clear (paint) coatings that can be applied to steel to maintain its color. The coating can vary in gloss levels from high gloss to matte. Your selection of a clear coating depends upon the expected exposure to the environment, such as indoor, outdoor, marine, sunlight, etc. If you intend to use a clear coating, you will first need to address the surface preparation of the steel and select a method that will not change its color.

Best wishes,

Ron Joseph
