Paint Spray Booth Filter Stages

Q. Just out of curiosity, if your new booth is designed with a 3-stage filtration system which meets EPA Method 319 requirements, do you need a differential pressure gauge installed across each filter stage or will a single pressure gauge across the entire booth meet the requirements under the Aerospace Industries NESHAP Rule.

A. I have always taught that a single measurement across all three filters is adequate, but a few weeks ago I met someone who told me that his state agency was requiring his facility to measure the pressure differential across each filter stage. I have no idea why anyone would need to do that as individual measurements have absolutely no beneficial environmental impacts.

If I were you, I would check with my state agency to see how they interpret the NESHAP or Title V permit.

Best wishes,

Ron Joseph
