Coatings for Food and Beverage Cans

Q. Is there any specific formulation that must be present for me to coat the interior of my tincan for packaging of magarine products? Magarine has high salt content ... so does the gold lacquer coating have to be extra resisant to acids or any chemicals for the matter?

Your advice and reply is greatly appreciated. Thank you

A. Thank you for your e-mail. I do not know what coating you should use, however the food industry in general uses waterborne, solvent-borne, UV curable and powder coatings that are baked at high temperatures and are applied with specialized spray guns. Two leading companies who sell into these markets are PPG http://www.ppg.com/, and Valspar, http://www.coatings.com/

You will need to select the most appropriate coating of depending on the type of production mind that you have, speed of the convey line, availability of production space, and other practical considerations. I suggest that you contact both of the above companies and pursue the selection with them.

Best wishes,

Ron Joseph
