Spray Booth Permits
Q. Here where I work, we do very little painting, and when we do it is out of
an aerosol paint can. We have a ventless paint booth that does not seem to be
working very well. What types of requirements or permits would I need in the
state of Ohio to put in a vented paint booth? Or do you have any other suggestions?
A. You might not need a permit from the State of Ohio if you are using "very
little" paint, but the fire department might want you to vent the booth,
and your insurance company will almost definitely want you to vent it to prevent
a fire, or worse and explosion. You will need to read the state's permit rules
to see what the "de minimus" amount of paint is below which a permit
is not required.
You didn't tell me anything about the size of the booth or its design; therefore,
I can't advise you. However, if you look at spray booth catalogues you will
find some very inexpensive "off-the-shelf" booths that you might want
to purchase. Alternatively, you might simply want to retrofit your booth with
a fan that will pull at least 100 ft/min of air.
I hope this helps.
