Mil-P-53022 & Fungus Growth

Q: Any chance you know whether a MIL-P-53022 primer is fungus resistant or not? I have searched and searched and can't find any research/documentation regarding fungus growth testing and MIL-P-53022.

Would appreciate any help you can provide.

A: MIL-P-53022 is probably not formulated to be fungus resistant because it is almost always used under an epoxy or polyurethane topcoat. If you need fungal resistance, you might be able to ask your paint vendor to spike the primer with the appropriate additive, but this will take the primer out of compliance with the MIL spec. If conformance to the spec is not important in your situation, then you might be justified to have the primer modified by your vendor. I do not recommend that you make the modification yourself since a paint chemist needs to select the appropriate additive and calculate the amount to be added.
